You may or may not have noticed that librarians are also sparce in numbers this Friday.

Why?

Professional development. This is how the librarian's stay informed and up to date in their knowlege.

The Oklahoma Chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries is having their annual conference in Oklahoma City today at Rose State College. The topic that four of our librarians are learning: "How Secure is Your Security?Prevention, Planning, and Response in Your Library."

As student's graduate and begin their career of choice...professional involvement and development is crucial in staying competitive in today's job market. If you answered yes, you are not alone.

The OSU-Tulsa library has a very large improvement project starting the week of June 23rd. A book shift!

What's a book shift?

The entire circulation collection will be moved a few rows back to make room for areas in the collection that are tight. We are moving books to make room for--MORE books!

This is a huge task that the circulation crew is tackling this summer, so thanks to them for working hard at this (also it might be a little noisy in the back of the library).

And if you are used to going straight to your favorite book section...look carefully...it may have moved.

Get your OKEY to get your Education to the next level!

The all important OKEY Account!

What is it? The library today should be more accommodating I think to myself. We now allow food and drink (within reason); we have group study rooms, collaboration at the computers is a growing trend, so why not cell phones.

Then I think of that one student in the back of the library. He's come here to get away from the noisy kids, or the distracting gaming roommate.

The library to that student is the one quiet place to come to study for that big test that will make or break his grade.

That student needs to not overhear what's for dinner, that student needs to not overhear what happened last weekend.

That student needs a sanctuary! This is why I tell people to silence their cell phone calls.

Is the library louder than it was 5 years ago. Yes, the very nature of libraries is changing and the need for collaboration has grown, so it is already a little too noisy for some and that is unfortunate.

However, each student who uses the library can and should control their cell phone conversations for the need of that student how came here to get out of the noise.

Lynn

Social Bookmarking.....

I have a great deal of favorite websites saved in Internet Explorer. I find myself at work ... and I want to look at something on my lunch hour.... but that bookmark is on my home computer!!! ERRR... and I don't remember where I saw that great website on Creating Blog Entries that pop.

Does this ever happen to you?? I have solved this problem with the help of technology!!

Social bookmarks. There are a few websites that let you keep bookmarks with tags in your own account to recall anytime you want. I'm no longer tied down to a computer specific favorites list. There are many social bookmarking websites out there, here are three good ones:

http://Del.icio.us is a yahoo based company where you create an account and then start adding your bookmarks or "tags"...your bookmarks are shared with other people and you can search others with similar insterests.

www.google.com has a social bookmark within their personal homepage setup...The thing I like about Google's is that you can create your own homepage with your RSS feeds and so much more. You can't really search others bookmarks so its more private.

www.simpy.com is another social bookmark tool that works similarly to google with a personalized homepage...you can search other bookmarks though.
